Fancy Twisting
Composite twisted yarns engineered for visual and textural effect
Effects can be introduced into yarns through twisting. Fancy yarns are produced by feeding multiple yarns or fibre strips in non-standard ways, or by twisting yarns of different structures together — the aim is to shape the visual character of the yarn itself. Unlike classical yarns, fancy-twist yarns carry a deliberate decorative irregularity in colour and/or form.
By varying raw materials (cotton, polyester, viscose, nylon, metallic), yarn counts and twist direction/turns (S/Z), a wide range of effects can be obtained. Common combinations include cotton on cotton, metallic with cotton, and metallic with nylon, polyester or elastane (Lycra).
Fancy-twist yarns are most often used in fashion-driven woven and knitted fabrics, home textiles (upholstery, curtains, carpets), accessories and lacework. On the twisting frame the core yarn and the effect yarn are fed at different speeds to create the desired visual signature — knots, loops, slubs, bouclé or gimp.
Features
- Muliné — The simplest fancy-yarn structure: two or more coloured yarns twisted in the reverse direction of their spinning twist.
- Bouclé — Semi-circular loop protrusions formed by overfeeding an effect yarn around the core.
- Loop yarn (Lup) — Similar to bouclé but produced with a thinner, twisted effect yarn for more circular protrusions.
- Knop (Knot yarn) — Knots formed at regular or irregular intervals as the effect material accumulates on the core.
- Slub (Şantuk) — Deliberate thick spots produced along the yarn at chosen intervals.
- Gimp — Decorative gimp yarn produced on ring spinning or double-folded frame systems.
- Metallic + Cotton / Carded — Twists in 40/1, 30/1 and 20/1 counts.
- Metallic + Nylon / LCRY — 70/2, 70/1 and similar covered/twisted combinations.
- Cable Metallic — Multi-folded heavy metallic composite twist yarns.
